Many years of wondering since my childhood why the design of Devastis always scratched my brain in such a satisfying way, and I finally realized it’s because it always struck a sentimental nerve for the way it vibed me the way that one level from Scaler did

Do you think Madeline could obtain all seven dragon balls and defeat Frieza?
i have spent an embarrassingly long time thinking about this.
in short: madeline could absolutely get all of the dragon balls. there's no feasible way she'd defeat frieza in a fight. if she used the dragon balls, she could defeat frieza via incapacitation.
in long? well... that's a funny story.
for the record, this is the first time i've ever power scaled something myself. that is to say i'm a little embarrassed to show my work. this is going to be rough, full of holes and inconsistencies, and partially based on vibes (a lot of sources boil down to "just look at it"). that said, i think my findings are more than interesting enough to make up for being amateurish. who knows, maybe someone will come along later and clean up my mess.
also, i'm well aware vs battles has a wiki page for madeline. however, they (logically) assume she's not her canon height of 7' tall. so i'm taking matters into my own hands and figuring things out myself.
let's lay the foundation first. on the dragon ball side of things, we're gonna assume the verse is pre-namek saga, so frieza is alive and the dragon balls only grant one wish. we're also gonna assume the z-fighters and co doesn't actively interfere with madeline and her goals, and that they don't need the dragon balls for anything. simple stuff.
to lay the foundations for celeste, we're assuming madeline just came fresh out of chapter 8; she'd be at her peak in-story, having already endured the treacherous nature of celeste's trail and the unwelcoming environment on the path to its core.
given the dash is probably something given to her by the mountain (the player simply can't dash until a certain point in the game, even if they know how), we can assume she probably doesn't have it if she's not on or near the mountain.
since we're focusing on what madeline is capable of, we're gonna do a few calculations. for future reference, we'll dictate that
madeline is 7' (84 inches) tall. this is canon.
madeline is 16 pixels tall, based on in game sprites.
madeline is ~218 lbs, which is (the average of) the average 7' woman's weight.
the inches per pixel of celeste is 84 / 16 = 5.25.
theo is 20 pixels tall, based on ingame sprites. 20 * 5.25 = 105, 105 / 12 = 8.75 feet, so...
theo is ~8'9 (~105 inches) tall.
theo is ~376 lbs, with data extrapolated from this table
we have no idea what the weight of the crystal theo is encased in is, or if the crystal theo is encased in even has a weight. it could be weightless but indestructible. since theo can be used to press buttons, something can only be done with a certain amount of force (like madeline dashing into them), we can assume it doesn't make him any lighter.
all that aside, madeline's notable feats include:
having a jump height of ~26 pixels (~136.5 inches, ~11.375 feet).
effortlessly lifting a 376 pound guy over her head.
effortlessly throwing said 376 pound guy ~93 pixels (~488.25 inches, ~40.6875 feet) away from her at a standstill. jesus christ.
effortlessly catching said 376 pound guy from theoretically any angle and any speed, while moving at theoretically any angle and any speed. extremely important to note that she does not get pushed back or otherwise hindered when this happens.
surviving and no-selling a plummet of well over 2500 meters (~8202.1 feet). not only did she fall, but she smashed through several feet of jagged crystals repeatedly with no repercussions. she did land in water, but since she was falling at terminal velocity, her bones should have splintered and killed her instantly. surviving fatally high falls is NOT a one-time occurrence, either.
being durable enough to smash through loose bricks and soft rock (since she can only do this in certain spots in-game, this implies said spots are weaker).
seemingly completely unfazed by extremely thin air, with no equipment to keep her breathing steady. keep in mind she's roughly 2.5 kilometers high in the air during this conversation with part of her.
seemingly completely unfazed by extreme heat and extreme cold, as well as the instantaneous switch between the two. this bitch is VERY extremophilic.
surprising amounts of will power. she'll even confront herself (heh) if it means getting what she wants.
can kick and wipe out Weird Fucked Up Eyeball Monsters three times her size.
in the funniest way possible, if i were to include farewell, i could technically say that madeline can outright manipulate reality. if she collects the berries in farewell, they end up in the strawberry pie in the epilogue. if we're to take this literally, that means she took them out of her dreams and into reality like she's fucking luffy. again, this would be an otherwise normal-ass canadian woman with that ability. as genuinely hilarious as that technicality is, this is so far beyond the vision of the developers that i'm not going to act on it. we could also technically claim she's functionally immortal because of Game Mechanics™. but i'm not going to do that because that would be boring.
also, we'll assume madeline just... knows frieza exists, somehow. frieza doesn't know madeline exists, but madeline's acutely aware of who frieza is, what he's capable of, and even what kind of shows he tunes into. the perks of anxiety, i guess.
anyway! we've established that madeline is exceptional for a human. at her base, she'd be on par with chi-chi. chi-chi's power level is 130, so we'll say that's madeline's power level as well. without any sort of known training - be it fighting or ki - she's already pretty fucking incredible.
all that said, let's see what she can actually do.
if money and travel aren't an object, i think madeline could 100% find the dragon balls and summon shenron. once she has her mind set on something, she'll see it through, even if it could kill her. she'd likely struggle since she doesn't have a radar, but since they have an electromagnetic pulse, she could try to find them with a metal detector if she knows where to look. since she undeniably has the ability to hold her own in a fight (just look at her feats!), actually getting the dragon balls really shouldn't be that hard of a task.
the same can't be said for the fight with frieza. if she were to get in a fight with frieza in her base form, she'd get wiped the fuck out. no contest. i really don't think that's a surprise to anyone. even if she uses the dragon balls, she would only match kami in power (whose power level is 220). in order to even touch first-form frieza, she would need a power level of 530k. his first-form is ~4076 times stronger than madeline's normally, and ~2409 times stronger if she was granted immense power.
the only way for her to have a fighting chance is if she trained her ki. that's assuming she'd be stronger than krillin, who is the strongest human. before the boost from grand elder guru, he would have had a power level of 13k in the frieza saga, which would mean this is the highest reasonable power level for madeline to achieve through vigorous training. if she were to reach that, first-form frieza would still be ~40 times stronger. an actual fight is a no-go.
she could maybe come up with a way to incapacitate frieza, however. since shenron can make wishes from a long ways away - including separate realms - there's a chance madeline could wish for, say, an undetectable gas leak on frieza's ship. this doesn't necessarily mean frieza would die, but he'd be fucked beyond belief if somebody lit a cigarette. what's more, it would be untraceable, meaning frieza would have no reason to be aggro'd against madeline.
to summarize, you're basically asking if chi-chi could defeat frieza on her own. the answer is "most certainly not with her fists."
...
however, if we instead use famous ROBLOX™ game Forsaken's interpretation of madeline as a baseline, she obviously scales to 1x1x1x1 (a fourth dimensional being) and therefore doesn't even need the dragon balls to absolutely obliterate frieza, so what the fuck ever /j

one of these days wanna talk about game mechanics as storytelling. and worldbuilding
#sure there's plenty of levels on which it makes perfect sense for geo characters to scale off defense#how much of that can be reflected in world? in culture things?#[pointing at all the hydro hp scalers] hey. hey. are there common cultural ideas about that sort of thing#all your elements very helpfully come with a certain ideal associated with them. there has Got to be in-world cultural extensions of that#feelings about getting visions that match or don't match your nation's element. stereotypes abt ppl w different elements#ofc lots of that would be largely arbitrary just like any good 'we have new boxes to sort ppl into :D' system#but there are also plenty of demonstrable similarities you can pull from our selection of playable characters that (sometimes) explain to y#to you in (...some) detail the circumstances under which they got their visions#i lied apparently we're talking abt this now#or at least abt visions since they're on the brain#like. i *do* pretty much ignore the oculi or the sigils as game-side only things#er too- your vision takes as much strength to operate as the story in question requires lol#waypoints i use selectively and pretty much restrict to the traveler for a number of reasons (vary by story)#'this guy scales on attack' is mechanics almost entirely but is very fun to read character implications into#was i going anywhere else with this#idk. game mechanics as storytelling elements are so very fun in any game send tweet#oh!#genshin impact

FusionFall Headcanons: Squish Scalers
Amphibious by nature, the Squish Scalers make for fearsome foes on both land and sea. Don't let their soft appearance fool you, because they want nothing more than to hook their teeth into you. You'll need to send them sleeping with the fishes before they can.
Notes about these monsters explain that their soft, squishy bodies actually allow them to absorb attacks easily. However, while this defense is highly effective against blunt weapons, the same cannot be said for energy-based ones. It's advised that fusion fighters use projectiles or melee weapons with added effects such as the lightning sword's ability to shock opponents when fighting the Squish Scalers.
The long shape of their bodies allow them to move both on land and sea in a similar way to water snakes. That being said, they have no issues being completely submerged either. They have two sets of pectoral fins, which allow them to swiftly change direction in the water. Their horizontal tailfins allow for further propulsion, meaning that they are capable of swift, sudden attacks. If you can keep to fighting these things on land, do so. If you have to face them in the water, do what you can to damage their fins to limit their movements.
Like the anglerfish that they're largely based on, the Squish Scalers communicate with one another using the bioluminescent parts of their bodies. Much of this is still difficult for researchers to full interpret, but one such example is that they will use their lures to signal other Squish Scalers in the area as a kind of alarm. Also like an anglerfish, these monsters are mostly ambush predators, only they utilize group tactics: If there's one, there are always a few others lurking nearby. Ways to disrupt this communication is include cutting off the lure or flashing lights at them to confuse them.
Due to their eyes being placed within their mouth, their vision is very limited. They can only really see what's directly in front of them, and their large teeth block off their vision further. Nevertheless, they may not require their sight as much as other creatures. Fish have organs called lateral lines, which allow them to sense other animals around them. As a result, it's believed that their eyes are used mostly for depth perception and to compensate for any confusion in pressure changes on land vs. water. It's difficult to sneak up on these monsters.
Because of the location of their eyes and the overall shape of their teeth, they actually have a specific weak point right at the center of their mouths even when they're closed. The middle teeth can't shut all of the way due to the others being so much larger. It requires an expert shot, but this gap can make for a quick kill.

Lizard Freedom Fighter!
Did a little fan art for the zappy blue lizard! It's a bit sad that this game is as obscure as it is! I'd love to see a Reboot or a Remaster of it one day! Either way, wanted to give some love to the baby and was feeling nostalgic.

Air Twister
Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, Yu Suzuki was attached to many of Sega’s high profile arcade games like Hang-On, Space Harrier, and OutRun, all using fancy 3D sprite scaling technology. He then shook up the gaming world with Virtua Fighter, then moved onto Shenmue, an expensive failure that resulted in his demotion. But having since left Sega for his own ventures, he’s returned to his roots with Air Twister, a 3D rail shooter which barely hides that it’s a modernized Space Harrier.

PixelFX Set To Release 4K Upscaler
The other day I covered the RetroTINK 4K and I thought it was way overpriced. Today, I see that PixelFX is set to release two iterations of their own 4K upscaler, called the “MORPH 4K.” There will be two options; analog and HDMI-only, and will be $500 and $400 respectively. According to PixelFX: Morph 4k + Analog – This is the Morph 4K equipped with an internal “Analog Bridge”. The analog…

Day 2 Revenge Kirby Fighters 3 and Knuckles: Old Man Yaoi Edition
⚠️ LONG (but good-faith) RANT (that gives a little extra context for today's drawing) UNDER THE CUT (don't worry it's not shipping discourse lmao) ⚠️
Okay so I know neither of these modes are canon and therefore it's SORT OF a moot point, but NARRATIVELY SPEAKING, Meta Knightmare Returns and Dededetour are completely and utterly backwards, right???
What beef does King Dedede have with Dark Meta Knight? What beef does Meta Knight have with Sectonia and Dark Matter Swordsman (besides the fact that they both breathe and hold pointy weapons)? I understand that there's this ongoing plotline with having MK face swordfighters to test his skill, but I still think King Dedede should have been the one to rematch both DMS and Sectonia in Robobot (I do know Sectonia DX in TDX exists, but she isn't the final boss of the Dededetour mode which kinda sucks).
Shadow Dedede himself is a decent idea, but he's new to the series and has absolutely no story introduction (and his design isn't all that interesting, at least to me). Sectonia? Love her, but she deserves a Dedede hammer to the face for all three phases and more. DMS (and Dark Matter in general)? The ORIGINAL Dedede opp (besides Kirby lol). I know these are just clones in-story, but the coolness factor is still there.
You can make the argument that MK got to fight Mecha Knight because of MKR--which is cool, definitely, but if it were King Dedede the same could be said for the Dedede Clone fight, so in my eyes it evens out (actually... Dedede beating Stock Mecha would probably have been even more hype. imho).
Also, a Galacta Knight battle with solo King Dedede would be rad. The power scalers would have a FIELD DAY!!!
Likewise, Meta Knight never actually got to beat DMK in a proper battle at any point, did he? So based on both canon and alt timelines, DMK could still whoop MK's ass. That's just wrong... :(
It's my understanding that TDX was made with absolutely no anticipation of Robobot, so it could be the case that they simply didn't want to give Dedede the spotlight twice. But I sort of wish they had held back on MKR regardless.
Really, I don't think you NEED the anticipation of Robobot's specific plot/mechanics to see that MKR would have fit perfectly in TDX, because it answers the question of "where the hell is MK and why did he sit back when Dedede got kidnapped"? Having him fight DMK would be a way cooler explanation than an implicit "he was doing something somewhere else."
Maybe he's been fighting on the sidelines and is now clearing out the castle--which is full of Sectonia's remaining minions, the strongest and most loyal--and getting to the bottom of some source of magic still coming from the castle. Meanwhile Dedede and Kirby are helping out the people of mainland Popstar that were displaced by Sectonia and the Dreamstalk. And DMK (or, even better--a form of Dark Mind!) serves as the final boss.
Likewise, while the main events of Robobot are going on, the King could be helping Floralia defend themselves from the invasion. (The existence of Sectonia Clone combined with the pause screen that claims "Floralia is too remote to be mechanized yet" is literally just a plot hole anyway. The invaders couldn't overtake Floralia by the time we're fighting Sectonia Clone... despite the fact that they obviously DID find the huge plant that leads DIRECTLY to their kingdom AND the invaders have a mother(computer)ship the size of Planet Popstar AND practically infinite robot soldiers...? Be so fr...)
Extra work/game industry deadlines are a consideration too, but I don't think that applies too heavily here because both modes could have heavily reused and repurposed assets and level designs.
MK could have just had the typical EX mode recolors and stuff, but maybe with the story explanation/design concept that the bosses are being controlled by the Dark Mirror this time, instead of being aggravated by Taranza.
Dededetour in Robobot could have subsequently reused TDX assets. I feel like this is even a case where reskins are the objectively cooler option, as opposed to entirely new assets: seeing the flowery, green areas of Floralia converted to gross, grey landscapes would have been AWESOME, as well as seeing the insects and flower-based enemies turned to robots. Maybe the People of the Sky have been mind controlled: the six main flower fairies work together as a miniboss, and defeating them/breaking their mind control apparatuses is how they are "rescued" here, in parallel to their game of origin. Maybe Taranza is also being mind-controlled in an act of universal karma and Dedede has to bail him out. That would be sick!
This stuff isn't a series-ruiner by any means, but it genuinely feels like a glitch in the Kirby matrix that the plotlines here are so mismatched. If I were whimsically rewriting the Kirby series, the MKR and Dededetour swap would probably be the first change I'd make. (And, again, I'd like to acknowledge that there are/were probably practical considerations of which I'm ignorant.)
You know how the series could still fix everything, though...? Kirby Fighters 3, BUT this time King Dedede and Meta Knight are the main protags. They get to fight magically-summoned/echo versions of DMK, DMS, Sectonia, King D-Mind, Yin-Yarn... you name it. TOGETHER. As husbands should!!!

you know, I’m about 30 hours in — almost to the end of Act 1 — and I think I’ve finally pinpointed what’s been really bothering me about Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
Light spoilers up to end(ish) of Act 1 below.
A little after I got Davrin and dealt with the Minathros vs. Treviso dilemma, I told my gf that this game was a fun RPG, but it didn’t feel like a Dragon Age game and I was having a hard time pinpointing what it was, because there are a lot of things I really love or understand about design-wise why certain choices were made.
The battle system is fun and dynamic, and I find myself switching my builds often when I’m stuck on a fight. The accessibility options have been great for my and my gf’s needs, including the difficulty scalers. I love the return to DA2 style maps except like, even better? The verticality is INSANE and the various environmental puzzles feel like the right amount of difficulty. I enjoy the characters and their interactions (mostly, more on that in a second).
And I understand the decision not to carry over EVERY SINGLE CHOICE since DA:O, and I actually think it’s smart to use a system that carries over specific choices — although I think they could have done more — and my gf even suggested the brilliant idea of a future DLC model that has you pick certain DLC-specific past choices that flesh out the impact of past choices as DLC. Which I think is a brilliant option for combating choice creep, because let me tell you — it becomes a LOT of writing and alternative dialogue lines for things that ultimately don’t have to have a direct impact on Rook, and I’d rather not have to feel the urge to set three games worth of choices every time I do a run.
And I can even handle either a little handwaving or just outright rewriting some past canon to make certain choices all wind up with a consistent outcome. I’m a Kingdom Hearts fan! I’m used to it!!! Whatever.
But it finally hit me what IS bugging me — DA:TV is the most sanitized, depoliticalized Dragon Age ever. It’s like Bioware read all the criticism of DA:I’s plot and the choice to make the Elvhen gods slavers over their own people and went, “Oh people didn’t like that, so we’ll stop doing that. We won’t mention the Antivan Crow’s history of training child slave soldiers, we’ll relegate the social discrimination toward the elves to a single Davrin line, children aren’t ripped from their parents under the Qun, and we’re going to show you all these ~*vaguely bad groups*~ without really giving any context of what makes them so truly awful. You’ll get the idea, because your groups are the good guys and the Big Damn Heroes.”
And I’m over here slamming my hands on the table shouting NO! It wasn’t that we didn’t want the politicized stuff! We wanted you to do it better! We wanted to feel conflicted working with the Antivan Crows, needing their network but despising their methods! We wanted to see the roots of an uprising in Minrathos lead by the escaped elves with Magisters like Dorian on the inside! We wanted false gods who could be slain to return the Elvhen parthenon, the gods the elves had always worshipped, but who had been prisoned and replaced — we wanted to find how much of Solas’s tales were truths versus lies! We wanted a goddamn nuanced look at the non-soldiers within the Qun, the ones who truly feel at peace knowing they have a purpose!!!
Not knowing what’s happening is an intentional choice, because if they spelled it out — set the conflicts within the larger geopolitical tensions that have brewed over three games — they’d have to acknowledge a long series of questionable narrative choices the games and supplemental material have made in the past. And from where I’m sitting, it looks like they chose to ignore and handwave 90% of it instead of actually wrestling with it and trying to bring some nuance to it. And that’s just disappointing.

First level. Nice place.

Repbaldactyls live here. You can see them in the sky.

What the heck is in those huge eggs in upper right? No idea. Circular floating platforms above the water move in a circular motion. The have what looks like roots underneath, so maybe they are plants?

Vine

Floaty rocks that break if you stay on it too long.

Cool plants

Little waterfall

Spiky thing. Probably plant.

Splodey fruit explodes when you touch it. Probably wants a nice corpse for its seeds to grow in.

Containers that open briefly with a puff when you step on the green thing. Contain vitaloids, klokkies, or an energy sphere. Yeah. I'm at a loss for how to spec bio this. Biotech appliances just out in the wilderness for some reason?

Creatures found here. Will have individual posts for each later.
